XRCulture: Testing XR Experiences in Tourism

10.04.2026Sparks

Within the XRCulture project, Arctur is leading the implementation of Scenario 2 – XR for Heritage Tourism (WP4), exploring how immersive technologies can enrich visitor experiences at cultural heritage sites.

At the core of the scenario is an innovative concept of holographic postcards, combining physical and digital elements. Visitors use a printed postcard with a QR code and a simple holographic pyramid to access 3D visualisations of heritage assets on their mobile devices - offering an engaging and accessible XR experience.

Following the preparation phase, the project has now entered the testing phase (March–June 2026) across six pilot destinations in Europe. Destinations are testing the solution in real-life settings, both internally and with visitors, while dedicated landing pages and hologram kits support the experience on-site.

A key focus of this phase is collecting visitor feedback and usage data, including engagement levels, usability, and overall experience. These insights will guide further improvements and help shape scalable XR solutions for tourism.

The ongoing testing confirms strong interest in such lightweight XR applications and highlights their potential to make cultural heritage more interactive and accessible to a wider audience.
